Gori Center has been in operation since 1 December 2011. Up to date around 3500 meetings
with some 98 000 participants were hosted by the Center. Among participants of such meetings
are representatives of state authorities, non-governmental organizations, media outlets,
business companies, political parties and ordinary citizens.
By the initiative of the Center more than 160 discussions were held on the most relevant issues
on both local and national levels. The meetings focus on issues relating to social, healthcare,
infrastructural, educational and other pressing issues concerning the Internally Displaced
People. The platform offered by the Center is being used by the representatives of the local
self-government to deliver reports prepared by the leaders of the self-government to the
general public and organize meetings with the citizens, which gradually became regular and are
being conducted up to date. The Gori Center is the only place in the city which holds annual
discussion of the local budget. Several times within a year the Gori Center hosts the city
mayor’s presentation of report of the achievements and the work carried out at the meeting
with the general public.
The Gori Center is actively involved in the advocacy of a number of important issues. For
instance: thanks to the efforts of the Gori Center annual fees at higher educational institutions
are completely covered for the students residing in the villages scattered along the border-line.
Persons with vision impairment have been granted wider access to banking products. Thanks to
the advocacy efforts made by the Center branches of several banks are completely adjusted to
their needs. In addition to this, some 800 citizens who did not agree with the reported
unreasonably high use of natural gas, addressed the energy ombudsman with the support of
the Center who studied the issue and supported them in solving it.
Since 2012 the Gori Center has been hosting the election media center. The media center hosts
events which aim at disseminating information to the general public regarding the election
campaigns of the candidates, formation of the voter lists, voting procedures and other
important issues concerning the elections.
The Center was the most active during the 2016 parliamentary elections because two former
ministers of defense were participating in the elections as candidates. During 2017 self-
government elections the Gori office was the only neutral, accessible space for all political
parties and election subjects.
Public discussions focusing on gender issues supported by the Center helped identify the most
pressing issues and elaborate the self-government activity plan. It should as well be noted that
the Gori office was the first one to appoint an adviser in gender issues.
Network of Centers for Civic Engagement (NCCE) presents focus group discussion results. The research was conducted in Gori Municipality to find out what concerns people the most in Rustavi and Gardabani. The project is funded by USAID Georgia and is supported by EWMI/ACCESS.
